Ferrum, Va. — The Lynchburg softball team claimed a dominant doubleheader sweep on the road, defeating Ferrum 11-1 (5) and 4-0.
In the first game of the afternoon, the Hornets' offense got off to a quick start. Alyssa Talayumptewa led off the game with a double to center field, allowing Lexi Powell to score the first run of the day. Madison Barnes followed with an RBI double to bring Talayumptua home, putting Lynchburg up 2-0 in the opening frame. The Hornets maintained their momentum throughout the game, scoring in every inning of the first contest.
In the second inning, after pinch runner Addison Walter stole third, Powell singled to bring her home.
Extra-base hits continued to fuel the Lynchburg offense. Sarah Watts smashed her fifth home run of the season, extending the Hornets' lead to 4-0. Kaligh Hackett added to the rally in the third, hitting an RBI double to left-center to score Barnes.
Ferrum managed to get on the board in the third, recording their first run of the game. However, Lynchburg shut down any further threat in the fourth inning. The Hornets put on six bases runners, four hits and two walks, scoring five runs to push their lead to 10-1.
Lynchburg added another run in the fifth, and Emily Charlton closed out the game, preserving the 11-1 victory. Charlton threw five solid innings, allowing just two hits and no walks.
In the second game of the day, Kailey Dorcsis delivered a spectacular performance in the circle. Dorcsis finished with 10 strikeouts, one walk, and just two hits allowed in the complete-game shutout.
Lynchburg's offense didn't heat up until the fifth inning. The first two runs came across that inning after Hackett doubled, followed by a pop-up to right field by Hodges that advanced the runner to third, allowing her to score on an error. Another unearned run came in after a Lexi Powell single brought home Alex Love.
The Hornets added two more unearned runs in the seventh inning to seal the 4-0 victory.
Lynchburg will return home this weekend, on Saturday, April 26, for the regular-season finale against No. 18 Randolph-Macon.
