Ashland, Va. — The University of Lynchburg women's lacrosse team saw its season come to a close in the ODAC Quarterfinal, narrowly falling to Randolph-Macon, 13-12.
Sydney Dumas finished the game with a sock trick, tying a career-high with six goals. Neely Morris and McKenna Steinau also contributed heavily, scoring three goals each.
Lynchburg started early and often in the opening frame. The Hornets jumped out to a 3-1 advantage after goals from Morris, Dumas, and Steinau. Dumas and Morris struck again within the first 15 minutes, giving Lynchburg a 5-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Dumas kept the offense rolling to begin the second quarter, but both sides quickly found themselves in a stalemate. After five scoreless minutes, the Yellow Jackets began to find their rhythm, scoring three goals in just over a minute to cut the deficit to one.
Dumas responded before the break to extend Lynchburg's lead, scoring on a free-position shot with 36 seconds remaining. However, it proved to be too much time for RMC. The Yellow Jackets won the draw control and marched downfield to score with three seconds left before halftime.
Just over 90 seconds after the intermission, Randolph-Macon scored to tie the game for the first time since 1-1. After trailing by as many as four in the first half, the Yellow Jackets flipped the script in the second. RMC's offense came alive, rattling off four more unanswered goals to take their first lead of the day and go up 10-7.
Dumas and the Hornets battled back in the latter stages of the third quarter, scoring three consecutive goals to tie the game heading into the fourth.
With a man-up advantage after a Lynchburg green card, Randolph-Macon reclaimed the lead at 11-10. The Yellow Jackets struck again a minute later on the next possession after winning the draw control. Steinau answered with a goal at the other end to keep the game within reach for the Hornets, but another Yellow Jacket goal with five minutes remaining kept Lynchburg down by two.
Steinau scored again with two minutes to go to keep Lynchburg alive, but crucial saves by the Yellow Jacket keeper down the stretch ultimately sealed the game and sent RMC to the semifinal with a 13-12 victory.
Despite winning the majority of statistical categories, the Hornets were outmatched in the center circle. Randolph-Macon dominated draw controls, winning 20 of 28 overall — including 16 of 20 in the final three quarters.
The Hornets finish the season with a 13-6 (6-4 ODAC) record — their most wins since 2010 and just the second time reaching 13 or more wins since 2001.
