Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team is prepped for a midweek clash against ODAC rival Washington and Lee in Lexington, Va. on Wednesday, April 9 at 7 p.m.
The No. 13 Hornets (7-4, 4-0) ride a five-game winning streak into tomorrow's affair against the No. 9/10 Generals. Lynchburg's most recent win came this past weekend against Roanoke in an offensive showcase, 19-18. The Hornets used a stretch of five consecutive goals in under a 3:51-span to take a three-goal advantage and hold onto it for good. Junior attack
Riley Hastings paced Lynchburg with a career-high seven points on five goals and two assists, including three of the five scores in the fourth period that pushed the Hornets in front.
Since 1999, the Generals have a slight edge in the series with the Lynchburg, 21-19. Each of the last three contests have resulted in WLU wins, most recently on May 12, 2024 with a 16-13 final in the third round of the NCAA tournament. Prior to that loss, the previous four meetings between these two teams were one-goal affairs and the road team claimed victory in each.
Washington and Lee comes into tomorrow's contest following back-to-back wins against Randolph and Randolph-Macon. Last weekend, the Generals defeated the Yellow Jackets in overtime, 12-11. James Haley netted the game-ending goal in OT off a feed from Colin Beatty. Tyler Spano was awarded offensive player of the week following his impressive performance, winning 21-25 faceoffs and grabbing 12 ground balls in the win.
The Generals have the 14th-highest scoring offense in the country this season with an average of 15.85 goals per game, the third-best mark in the conference. Hillis Burns leads the charge with the most assists per game in the ODAC at 2.18 per game third-most goals per game average in the conference with 2.73. WLU is also solid on the defensive end, holding opponents to 9.46 goals per outing, the second-lowest in the ODAC.Â
Lynchburg boasts the eighth-highest scoring offense in division III, averaging 16.55 goals per game. The Hornets are ranked 16th in points per game this season with a 25.09 mark. While fifth year midfielder
Jake Rust ranks atop the conference in goals per game with a 2.82 average, Hastings and sophomore middie
Liam Holman are top-6 in the conference in assists per affair with 1.55 and 1.45, respectively.Â
Following tomorrow's matchup, the Hornets will return home to face Averett on Saturday, April 12 at 7 p.m., which will also serve as the team's senior day.
