Lexington, Va. -- An intense overtime affair concluded with the University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team dropping to host and ODAC rival Washington and Lee, 14-13, on Wednesday night at Wilson Field.
The No. 13 Hornets (7-5, 4-1) took an early advantage after a string of six consecutive goals in the first period and beginning of the second quarter, but the No. 8/10 Generals (11-3, 7-0) rallied back in the second half with a 7-2 run in the third quarter. After a battle in the fourth quarter that had just three goals scored - two from Lynchburg and one from Washington and Lee - the sides were deadlocked on the scoreboard, leading to extra lacrosse.
An unfortunately-timed penalty to end regulation allowed the Generals to get the first possession of overtime with a man-up opportunity. Although WLU did not capitalize with an extra man, the Generals held possession on the offensive end for the entire overtime period before Joey Allen netted the game-winning shot off a dish from James Cardillo.Â
After W&L took an early 3-1 edge by the 9:39-mark in the first quarter, the Hornets scored six straight in a span of 9:23. Fifth year middie
Jake Rust scored three during that stretch and the team as a whole netted two extra-man goals. Following two goals apiece for the remainder of the second quarter, the squads went into the halftime intermission with Lynchburg in front, 9-5.
During Washington and Lee's third-quarter rally that put the home team back in front, Jack Elliot scored three times, including the first three goals of the stretch. That run concluded with 12 seconds left in the third period and the Generals had their first lead since the first quarter at 12-11. Junior attack
Finn Schmidt nailed two shots in the fourth quarter to take back the advantage, but Hillis Burns bagged the final goal of regulation with 4:11 left on the clock.
Rust paced the Hornets offensively with four goals, while junior attackman
Riley Hastings tallied three assists. Schmidt produced a hat trick and junior attack
Spencer Vandenberg added two goals and one assist as the other Lynchburg performers with three points. Elliot (4g, 1a) and James Haley (3g, 2a) each had five points for WLU in the outing while Allen (4g, 1a) and Burns (2g, 2a) had four points apiece.
The Hornets return to action this weekend when they welcome Averett to Shellenberger Field for the team's senior day on Saturday, April 12 at 7 p.m.
