Lynchburg, Va. -- After an 11th-inning walk-off homer followed by an offensive surge in today's double header, the University of Lynchburg baseball squad clinch a spot in the final four of the ODAC postseason by sweeping Ferrum at Fox Field on Friday afternoon.
Conner Moore cranked the walk-off home run in the 11th inning of game one to earn a 7-6 victory, then the baseball crew propelled to an 18-4 triumph in game two.
The No. 5 Hornets have been nothing but remarkable on the home field of James C. Fox Field this season with a flawless 20-0 record at home this season. With today's triumphs, Lynchburg will look ahead to the final four of the conference playoffs, which will take place in Tysons, Va. at Capital One Park from Thursday, May 8 through Saturday, May 10.
Game one of today's affair was a thriller packed with excitement, especially in extra innings. After falling behind 1-0 in the opening frame, Lynchburg responded in the second inning with a solo homer from
Bryce Demory to knot the score at one apiece. Ferrum steadily built a 4-1 lead behind an RBI single from Seth Shannon in the fourth, a solo homer by Shawn Baxter in the sixth, and a sacrifice fly from JJ Tyree in the seventh.
Lynchburg roared back in the bottom of the seventh, stringing together three consecutive RBI singles from
Benton Jones, Moore, and
Tyler Howlett to even the score at 4-4. Ferrum regained the lead in the 10th on a two-RBI single by Gregory Melo, but the Hornets struck right back.
Eric Hiett singled home a score, and
Joe Munitz drew a bases-loaded walk to tie it, 6-6, in the latter half of the inning. In the bottom of the 11th, Moore delivered the final blow:Â a walk-off solo home run to right field, effectively putting the nail in the coffin for the first game of the ODAC postseason.
Game two saw the Hornets swarm with an offensive showcase. Lynchburg wasted no time, striking in the first with a two-RBI fielder's choice by Demory, aided by a Ferrum error. Jones followed with a two-RBI triple in the second frame, and Lynchburg extended the lead to 6-0 by the third thanks to a wild pitch and a solo homer from
Logan Webster.
Ferrum responded with two runs in the fourth, but the Hornets answered swiftly with a six-run bottom half. Jones continued his impressive performance with an RBI double, Demory crushed a two-run homer, and
Sean Pokorak added a sac fly. Demory finished the second game with four RBI and totaled five on the day.
The Hornets broke the game wide open in the sixth, scoring seven runs headlined by Munitz with a two-RBI single that capped the run and allowed
Brandon Garcia and
Maddox Tsutsui to score. Warren would add one more RBI single in the seventh to cap the scoring.
The baseball team will keep fighting in the conference postseason for Finals Weekend. Following the ODAC postseason, the Hornets will await their future in the NCAA tournament.
