Box Score Tysons, Va. -- In the opening contest of the ODAC championship weekend, the top-seeded University of Lynchburg baseball team surged to a 14-2 victory against fourth-seeded Shenandoah on Thursday afternoon at Capital One Park.
The No. 5 Lynchburg Hornets used a four-run fourth frame to go in front and held onto the advantage for the remainder of the contest, adding pairs of runs in the sixth and seventh innings and five additional runs in the eighth. The Hornets of Shenandoah kicked off scoring in the affair as Brody Pickette knocked one for a solo homer in the top of the second frame. Lynchburg responded quickly in the bottom half of the inning asÂ
Logan Webster doubled down the left field line to scoreÂ
Bryce Demory.
Lynchburg separated in the fourth inning, beginning with a sacrifice fly from Webster that launched far enough to score
Sean Pokorak.
Eric Hiett added on by slicing a single to score Demory. Lynchburg capitalized on a mistake by Shenandoah on Hiett's single that allowed for both Hiett and Warren to score, extending the lead to 5-1 after the fourth frame.
The Hornets of SU inched back with a double from Connor Houser that allowed Pickette to score, but the Hornets of Lynchburg responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Webster and
Joe Munitz each tallied an RBI, Webster with a double and Munitz with a base knock.
It was all Lynchburg the rest of the way. After Pokorak blasted a solo homer to left field, Hiett doubled to left center and scored Demory to close out scoring in the seventh inning. In the next frame,
Benton Jones notched a hit that was followed by an error that allowed Munitz and
Brandon Garcia to score. Pokorak added a sacrifice fly while Hiett crushed a two-RBI triple for the final scores of the eighth frame.
The recently selected ODAC Pitcher of the Year,
Tyler Kaltreider, earned the victory in today's game. He threw eight strikeouts in 28 batters faced while allowing seven hits and two earned runs.
Colin McGuire and
Austin Riney threw an inning each in the final two frames of the day to close out the contest.
Lynchburg advances to game four of the ODAC championship weekend and will face the winner of Randolph-Macon vs. Bridgewater. That game will take place in the same stadium as today's outing on Friday, May 9 at 2:30 p.m.Â
