Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team is set to embark on its 13th consecutive NCAA tournament with Stevenson up first for a second round contest, hosted by Christopher Newport University, on Saturday, May 10 at 3 p.m.
The Hornets are ready for a rematch with the Mustangs after dropping their outing to Stevenson earlier this season in the Callum Robinson Mustang Classic, 14-8. The two sides were tied at 6-6 heading into the halftime intermission before Stevenson scored seven straight out of the break. Sophomore middie
Liam Holman paced the Lynchburg offense with five points on two goals and three assists.
Last time out, Lynchburg squared off against Washington & Lee in the ODAC championship and was nipped, 13-12, in an overtime thriller. After Holman and junior
Riley Hastings netted back-to-back goals to close our regulation and send the game into an extra sudden-victory period, Elliot Cohen bagged the game-winning goal for the Generals' to seal their second overtime win over the Hornets this season.
Since 1999, Stevenson has a slight edge in the series against Lynchburg, 9-7. Before the last matchup went the Mustangs' way, the Hornets claimed the previous four meetings, holding Stevenson to single digit goals in each contest. Throughout this season, Lynchburg has claimed victory in each game that opponents were held to 12-or-fewer goals and have won each outing when scoring 14-or-more goals.
The Mustangs most recently dropped their conference championship bout against York (Pa.) with a 16-10 final score. Stevenson boasts the 13th-highest scoring offense in the nation, averaging 16.74 goals per game this season. Junior attackman Max Racich is the top contributor to the offensive production with a conference-leading average of 2.84 goals per affair. The Mustangs also have the sixth-most productive man-up offense this season, capitalizing on .507 percent of their extra-man opportunities.
Lynchburg brings the 11th-best scoring offense in the country that averages 17.32 goals per game to Saturday's competition. Fifth year midfielder
Jake Rust is the top producer for the Hornets' high-powered offense, scoring 2.58 goals per game on average. Hastings and Holman are significant offensive contributors as well. Hastings leads the team in points with 58 on 31 goals and 27 assists while Holman had tallied 54 points on 31 goals and 23 assists.
Should Lynchburg stand victorious on Saturday, the men's lacrosse team will play on Sunday, May 11 against the winner of Christopher Newport and Grove City.
