Lynchburg Takes Down Denison in Season Opener

Granville, Ohio -- The University of Lynchburg field hockey team earned its first victory of the 2025 campaign on Friday afternoon, blanking Denison 2-0 on the road.

The Hornets wasted no time establishing control, breaking through in the opening quarter. Junior midfielder Tatum Humphries calmly converted a penalty stroke to give Lynchburg the early lead. Humphries has remained automatic in those high-pressure moments throughout her collegiate career, building on a perfect 4-for-4 mark from last season.

The second quarter showcased more attacking intent from the Hornets. Lynchburg generated four shots, three of them on goal, and earned a 3-0 edge in penalty corners. Despite the relentless pressure, Denison goalkeeper Therese Lucian stood tall, turning away multiple chances to keep the Big Red within striking distance at the half.

Coming out of the break, Denison began to find its offensive rhythm, recording its first shot attempts of the contest. The Lynchburg defense, however, proved just as resilient. Anchored by veteran goalkeeper Shay Schoones and a composed back line, the Hornets consistently turned away opportunities and denied the Big Red an equalizer. Schoones finished the match with three stops to preserve the shutout.

Lynchburg's persistence on the attacking end finally paid off again in the fourth quarter. Junior forward Khanyisile Mzizi delivered the dagger, slotting home the Hornets' second goal of the day off a well-placed feed from Danielle Coon. The score provided Lynchburg with much-needed breathing room and ultimately secured the team's first win of the season.

The clean sheet victory continues a strong defensive tradition for the Hornets, who posted seven shutouts during the 2024 campaign. Friday's effort marked an encouraging start to what they hope will be another stout year on the defensive end.

Lynchburg will look to build on the win quickly, turning its attention to a Saturday matchup against DePauw at 2 p.m. before returning to the Commonwealth.
