Granville, Ohio —The University of Lynchburg defense continued its dominant start to the season, posting a second straight shutout in a 4-0 victory over DePauw on Saturday.
The Hornets controlled the action from the outset, keeping the Tigers without a single shot attempt and limiting them to just three penalty corners on the day.
Lynchburg generated pressure early with six penalty corners in the opening frame but came up empty on each. On their seventh and final attempt, senior midfielder Danielle Coon broke through, finishing off a feed from Allie Freeman to give the Hornets the lead.
The second quarter followed a similar script, as Lynchburg created multiple opportunities but couldn't convert until senior forward Aurora Balsamo cashed in on the Hornets' final corner of the half.
Balsamo then set up fellow forward Anna Dorrestijn in the third quarter, and the Driehuis, Netherlands, native delivered Lynchburg's third strike. Dorrestijn added her second goal of the day in the fourth to put the finishing touches on the victory.
Efficient on offense and relentless on defense, the Hornets converted four of their seven shots on goal while never allowing DePauw a chance to threaten.
Lynchburg (2-0) will close out its season-opening road swing on Sunday, Sept. 7, at Bates in Lewiston, Maine.
