Lynchburg Defeats Mary Washington, 5-2, in Home Opener

Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg field hockey team notched their first home win of the season, taking down Mary Washington 5-2.

The first frame began with a slew of offensive fireworks. Saar Prins struck first off of a feed from Danielle Coon on a penalty corner, deflecting in a shot to take a 1-0 lead. Mary Washington's Mackenzie Proffitt quickly responded on the other end off of an Eagle's penalty corner from the top of the circle to tie the game at one apiece. Nevertheless, Prins struck again in the opening quarter on a backhand shot for a 2-1 lead and set a career-high for goals in a single contest.

Before the intermission, the Eagles responded once again, trading blows with the Hornets. Grayson Scott tapped in a rebound to even the scoreboard at 2-2 going into the locker room.

Coming out of the break, the Hornets came out with a newfound intensity. After four shots in the first and second quarter, Lynchburg nearly doubled that total with seven in the third and fourth respectively. Anna Dorrestijn found Callie Short just outside the cage to punch in Lynchburg's third goal of the night to reclaim the lead.

The Lynchburg defensive intensity lasted the entirety of the contest. A steal from Coon in the fourth deep in Mary Washington territory led to a backhanded breakaway goal to give the Hornets their largest lead of the day. The goal punctuated an outstanding offensive performance with two assists and one goal for four points, setting a new career-high for both assists and points.

Lynchburg sealed the victory with the final goal coming from Khanyisile Mzizi, collecting her own rebound off a penalty corner and uncorking a shot for her second goal of the season.

The Hornets now turn to a neutral site, top-15, matchup against Ursinus at Liberty Univeristy on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 4 p.m.
