Harrisonburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's soccer team scored four consecutive goals, including three in the second half and one in the ending ticks of the first half, and secured a 4-1 victory against Franklin and Marshall on Wednesday evening at the Horizons Edge Sports Campus.
The Hornets (5-0-2) remain unbeaten through seven games and have improve their current winning streak to four straight games. Reigning ODAC Rookie of the Year
William Casey had his best outing of the season offensively, scoring twice in under a four-minute span in the second half to salt away the contest. With four tallies on the scoreboard, Lynchburg notched its second-highest scoring total of the year.Â
The Diplomats (1-6-1) got on the board first as Miguel Rosa controlled a deflection off corner and fired it past Lynchburg keeper
Thomas Viscuso. After a Hornet defender attempted to clear the ball off the corner, it found the feet of Rosa who hit it with force at Viscuso and ricocheted it off his arms into the top corner.
With mere seconds remaining in the first half, Lynchburg had a breakaway chance on goal that was halted by Franklin and Marshall netminder Diego Moreno. He was distributed a red card for his takedown and the Hornets were awarded a free kick near the top left corner of the box.
Chris Bovo delivered a strike that floated into the top corner past the outstretched arms of substitute goaltender Nolan Booth and the sides went into the halftime intermission with an even 1-1 score.
Out of the break with an extra man, Lynchburg applied pressure on the offensive side, firing off 14 shots in the second half. In the 64th minute, Casey netted his first goal of the affair and second of the season after
Matthew Viscuso had his shot deflected off a Diplomat defender. Just a few minutes later in the 67th minute, Viscuso found Casey for the team's third goal of the competition, extending the advantage to 3-1 with a bit more than 20 minutes to play.Â
In the final minute of action, Lynchburg was bestowed a free kick in the offensive area and
Jacson Shepherd fired away into the top bins for his first career goal. Of the Hornets' 19 shots, 10 were struck inside the woodwork, the second-most shots on goal for Lynchburg in a match this season.
The Hornets will take their four-game winning streak to Ashland, Va. this weekend to take on their first ODAC opponent of the season in Randolph-Macon on Saturday, Sept. 27 at noon.
