Lexington, Ky. -- The first week of the AVCA Coaches poll was unveiled on Tuesday, Sept. 2, and the Lynchburg Hornets women's volleyball team was included in the receiving votes colum.
The Hornets slotted in at eleventh in the receiving votes category, with 21 total adjusted points.
Lynchburg has never entered the top-25 before, and is earning national recognition for the first time in program history.
This announcement was released prior to Lynchburg's four set victory over the Southern Virginia Knights, who were also recognized with votes.
The recognition resulted from four consecutive victories to begin the season in their opening slate of matches in New Jersey, defeating Willaim Patterson and Washington College (Md.) in five frames, followed by Kean and Mount Alyoisus in three sets. The Hornets were one of two teams, alongside Montclair State, that left the opening round robin tournament undefeated.
"This is a culmination of all the hard wok that's gone in over the last 18 months and we're super excited to continue to build upon it," said head coach
Kevin Cardoza. "Continuing to hone in on our skills and focus on improving day at a time to take care of the next team on our schedule."
Lynchburg is one of three ODAC schools on the first week of the poll, along with Virginia Wesleyan with 61 total adjusted points and Washington & Lee at 9th in the poll with 1,393. In total 51 total teams received votes and were listed on two or more ballots.
The AVCA Poll has released weekly polls for division three volleyball since 1992. The organization keeps an archive only of teams that enter the top ranking, without team's receiving votes included.
