LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg Hornets fell in their third consecutive conference matchup to the Roanoke Maroons, 92-68.
The contest began with an extremely competitive opening 20 minutes. Both teams traded the lead 15 times and were tied on seven occasions during the first half of action. Jamarcus Brown led the way for the Hornets early, scoring 11 points by the midway mark, highlighted by a posterizing slam dunk followed by a three-pointer on back-to-back possessions. The sophomore forward finished with a team-leading 18 points.
Michael Gray also started hot from distance, knocking down four three-pointers on his way to 16 points. Meanwhile, Jake Hart helped anchor the perimeter defense, collecting three steals and holding the Maroons to three-of-11 shooting from beyond the arc in the first half.
However, after the teams headed into the locker room tied at 40, Roanoke's offense came alive in the second half. The Maroons' leading scorer, Jackson Bell, caught fire from long range, converting seven of eight three-point attempts. Once he found his rhythm, the junior guard never slowed down, finishing with a career-high 31 points, 15 rebounds, and eight made threes.
Elijah Thomas turned in a strong second-half performance as well, pouring in a career-best three three-pointers to finish with 13 points and six rebounds.
Lynchburg will look to regroup on the road Friday, Jan. 23, in Lexington against the Washington and Lee Generals.
