Hornets Lead Wire-To-Wire In Win Over Maroons

Salem, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's basketball team produced a strong all-around performance and claimed a 67-43 victory against Roanoke on Wednesday night at the Cregger Center.

The Hornets (9-7, 2-5 ODAC) led the Maroons (7-9, 1-6) for nearly the entire contest and controlled the game at both ends of the floor to earn the road win. Lynchburg opened the night with an efficient first quarter, shooting .500 percent from the field and building a 16-11 advantage after 10 minutes. The Hornets extended that momentum into the second quarter, where they outscored Roanoke 21-9 behind sharp shooting and defensive pressure. Lynchburg went nine-for-14 from the floor in the second period and took a 37-20 lead into halftime.

Audra Petty paced Lynchburg offensively with a game-high 23 points on eight-of-13 shooting, including a pair of three-pointers, while also going five-for-six at the free-throw line. Brooke Cason followed with 10 points and 10 rebounds for her first career double-double, shooting four-for-six from the field and knocking down two shots from beyond the arc. Cason also controlled the defensive end, tying her collegiate-best steal total with five and adding one block. Bree Spainhour also earned a double-double - her first this season - with 14 points and a team-high 12 rebounds, helping Lynchburg control the glass with a 46-37 rebounding edge.

Defensively, the Hornets limited Roanoke to .203 percent shooting from the field and just three-for-25 from 3-point range. Roanoke made a brief push in the third quarter, edging out the Hornets by a slight 15-14 margin, but Lynchburg responded and closed the game by outscoring the Maroons 16-8 in the fourth quarter, pushing the lead to as many as 26 with 1:52 to go in the contest.

Lynchburg finished the night shooting .491 percent from the field and made 10-of-14 from the charity stripe. The Hornets scored a whopping 40 points in the paint and tied their season-best in assists with 18.

The women's basketball team has a short turnaround before returning to action on Friday, Jan. 23 at 6 p.m. when Eastern Mennonite visits Turner Gymnasium.
