Hornets Cruise To 68-55 Victory Over Royals

Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's basketball team had four players score in double-figures en route to a hard-fought 68-53 victory against ODAC foe Eastern Mennonite on Friday night in Turner Gymnasium.

The Hornets' (10-7, 3-5 ODAC) four scorers that hit double-digits in the contest against the Royals (5-12, 0-8) were Audra Petty with a game-high 22, Kate Littlejohn with 15, and both Brooke Cason and Bree Spainhour, who finished the outing with 10 points apiece.

Petty connected on seven-of-17 shots from the floor and knocked down four 3-pointers. Littlejohn tallied seven rebounds, and five assists, while shooting five-of-12 from the field and five-of-six at the free throw line. Spainhour contributed a eight rebounds, which tied with Selah Parker for the most in the competition and helped Lynchburg finish with a 41-27 edge on the boards.

Lynchburg set the tone early, jumping out to a 20-10 lead after the first quarter by hitting eight-of-16 shots while holding Eastern Mennonite to just .267 percent from the field. After the Hornets gained the lead in the first quarter, they remained in front for the remainder of the affair. Both sides played even in the second quarter scoring 13 points each, sending the squads into the halftime intermission with a 33-23 Lynchburg advantage.

Eastern Mennonite made a push in the third quarter, outscoring Lynchburg 20-17, but the Hornets responded with composure down the stretch. Lynchburg sealed the game in the fourth quarter by scoring 18 points and shooting a perfect eight-for-eight from the free-throw line in the period. The Hornets' ability to convert at the line proved crucial as they maintained control late.

Lynchburg finished the game shooting .407 percent from the field and .905 percent at the free-throw line. The Hornets also scored 34 points in the paint and held a 13-2 advantage in second-chance points. Bench production was another key factor, as Lynchburg received 30 points from its reserves.

Next up, the women's basketball team will hit the hardwood against Hill City rival Randolph on the road on Wednesday, Jan. 28 at 7:30 p.m.
