Hornets Drop Contest Against Emory Eagles

Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's basketball team played its second competition in as many days and fell to Emory, 71-45, on Saturday afternoon in Turner Gymnasium.

Natalie Poole and Audra Petty led the Hornets (7-4) offensively with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Kate Littlejohn was a significant contributor on the defensive end, tallying four defensive rebounds, two steals, and two blocks. Allyson Booth contributed five points and a team-high six rebounds in limited minutes. The No. 7 Eagles (10-0) had three performers notch 10 points apiece to lead the team: Mary Mullinax, Tatum Olson, and Mia Strazza.

Emory grabbed the advantage from the opening tip, building a 20-7 lead after the first quarter and extending its advantage to 36-11 at halftime. The Eagles shot .533 percent from the field in the opening period and limited Lynchburg to .188 percent shooting over the first 10 minutes.

The Hornets were unable to find consistent offense in the first half against a stout Eagles defense. Emory capitalized on turnovers and second-chance opportunities, outscoring Lynchburg 22-8 in the paint through the first two quarters.

Lynchburg showed improved play coming out of halftime scoring 12 points in the third quarter. Poole totaled five points in the frame and Jacquelyn Jakubecy added a conventional three-point play, while Petty and Brooke Cason each connected on field goals to help slow the Eagles' momentum.

The Hornets had their strongest showing on both ends in the fourth quarter, scoring 22 points while holding Emory to 15. Despite the late push, Emory maintained control, shooting .389 percent in the fourth to close out the win.

Next up, Lynchburg will head back into ODAC play with a midweek affair at Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday, Jan. 7 at 5 p.m.
