BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The University of Lynchburg field hockey team remained unbeaten in conference play with a 2-1 road victory over Bridgewater on Saturday afternoon at the Jopson Athletic Complex.
The Hornets improved to 8-5 overall and 3-0 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play, using a late fourth-quarter goal from Abigail Junker to break a 1-1 tie. Lynchburg controlled much of the contest statistically, finishing with a 22-7 advantage in shots and a 14-4 edge in penalty corners
Lynchburg struck first in the opening quarter when Grace Peterson converted off a Taylor Secrist assist to give the Hornets an early 1-0 advantage. The goal continued a strong stretch for Peterson following her four-goal outing against Sweet Briar earlier in the week.
The Hornets continued to generate opportunities in the second quarter, recording 10 shots and six penalty corners. Bridgewater goalkeeper Rachel Adel kept Lynchburg from extending its lead, while the Eagles found an equalizer when Mollie Best scored off an assist from Kiley Parker.
Lynchburg continued to press after the tying goal and earned a penalty stroke later in the quarter, but Adel turned away the attempt to keep the game level heading into halftime.
Neither side was able to break through during the third quarter. Lynchburg produced four penalty corners in the frame, while Shay Schoones made a save and the Hornets' defense blocked a pair of Bridgewater attempts to preserve the tie.
The Hornets increased the pressure again in the fourth quarter. Peterson and Sofia Boon each put attempts on goal before Lynchburg finally broke through late in the contest.
Following a penalty corner, Khanyisile Mzizi put a shot on frame that was stopped by Bridgewater goalkeeper Thaleia Khader, but Junker collected the opportunity and scored to put Lynchburg ahead 2-1. The Hornets continued to attack after taking the lead, forcing another save before closing out the victory.
Peterson and Junker accounted for Lynchburg's two goals, while Secrist recorded the Hornets' lone assist. Secrist led the team with six shots, while Sydney Cappallo added four shots, all on goal. Schoones finished with three saves while allowing one goal across the full 60 minutes.
