Lynchburg Equestrian Takes First At Washington And Lee IHSA

Troutville, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg equestrian team traveled on Saturday to compete in an IHSA equestrian show hosted by Washington and Lee University and Roanoke College. The Hornets captured first place in the team standings, finishing with 47 total points and 44 points after the drop score.

Lynchburg opened the competition with a strong showing in the Open divisions, as Amaya Bellfield earned first-place finishes in both Open Fences and Open Flat. Bellfield's two victories gave Lynchburg seven points in each division and contributed to the team's overall total.

The Hornets continued their success in the Intermediate divisions, sweeping both classes. Mckenzie Burch claimed first place in Intermediate Fences, while Adam Matejko followed with a victory in Intermediate Flat. The two first-place finishes added another 14 points to Lynchburg's team score.

In the Limit divisions, Lynchburg continued to earn points through additional top finishes. Jessica McElhaney placed fourth in Limit Fences, while Burch returned to the ring to secure second place in Limit Flat. The results contributed three and five points, respectively, to the Hornets' team total.

Lynchburg also found success in the Novice division, where Sydney Remington captured first place in Novice B. The victory earned seven points for the Hornets, adding another first-place finish to the team's performance. In the Introductory division, Amaya Shuler rounded out Lynchburg's results with a third-place finish, contributing four points.

Across the competition, Lynchburg recorded five first-place finishes, along with a second-place, third-place and fourth-place result. The Hornets earned seven points in each of the Open Fences, Open Flat, Intermediate Fences, Intermediate Flat and Novice divisions.

Lynchburg's 44-point total after the drop score secured the team championship ahead of Virginia Tech, which finished second with 33 points, and Washington and Lee, which placed third with 27 points. The result marked a first-place team finish for the Hornets at the Washington and Lee/Roanoke College-hosted show.

The Hornets' next IHSA competition will be the Lynchburg IHSA in Rustburg, Va. on Sunday, November 8.
