LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg field hockey team continued its strong start to conference play with a 10-0 victory over Sweet Briar on Tuesday evening at Shellenberger Field.
Grace Peterson highlighted the Hornets' offensive outburst with a career night, scoring four goals and adding two assists. Peterson entered the contest with two goals on the season before doubling that total in a single evening. The four-goal performance marked her first multi-goal outing since Oct. 26, 2024, against Eastern Mennonite. Peterson also became the second Hornet to score four goals in a game this season, joining Sydney Cappallo, who accomplished the feat against Denison on Sept. 6.
The Hornets improved to 7-5 overall and 2-0 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play behind an attack that featured five different goal scorers. Lynchburg outshot Sweet Briar 37-1 and held a 10-1 advantage in penalty corners.Â
Taylor Secrist quickly put Lynchburg on the board in the opening quarter, finishing a chance set up by Peterson. Peterson followed with a goal of her own off an assist from Callie Short before Sofia Boon pushed the advantage to three, with Peterson providing her second assist of the period.
The Hornets carried their momentum into the second quarter. Secrist recorded her second goal of the evening with Allie Freeman supplying the assist, while Sydney Cappallo added another off a feed from Secrist to send Lynchburg into halftime with a 5-0 advantage.
Peterson took over in the third quarter, finding the back of the cage twice early in the frame. Lauren Mark then joined the scoring column off an assist from Khanyisile Mzizi before Peterson completed her four-goal performance with another strike, assisted by Cappallo. Lynchburg scored four times in the period to extend its advantage to 9-0.Â
Cappallo closed the scoring with her second goal of the contest late in the fourth quarter.
Peterson finished with four goals and two assists on six shots, placing five attempts on target. Cappallo and Secrist each recorded two goals and an assist, while Boon and Mark added one goal apiece. Mzizi, Freeman and Short also registered assists.Â
Defensively, Lynchburg limited Sweet Briar to just one shot. Shay Schoones played the opening half and made the Hornets' lone save before Lila Seifert took over in goal for the final 30 minutes to complete the shutout
