LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's volleyball team clinched a victory in its home opener Wednesday night, defeating Randolph in straight sets, 25-17, 25-17, 26-24.
After controlling the first two frames, the Hornets were pushed to the brink in the third before finding the final two points they needed to complete the sweep and move to 3-0 in the match.
Bryce Jackson led the Hornets with 10 kills on a blistering .692 clip, committing just one error on 13 swings. Joshua Davis added a match-high 11 kills and three service aces, while Troy Trujillo chipped in six kills and a block assist. At the setter position, Will Radi orchestrated the offense with 28 assists and six digs.
Lynchburg finished with 39 kills on a .347 hitting percentage, adding 12 service aces and seven total blocks to balance a steady offensive effort.
Lynchburg set the tone early. The Hornets posted 11 kills and hit .300 in the opening set, separating midway through on a service run that forced Randolph out of system. In the second, Lynchburg was even sharper, recording 14 kills and a .440 hitting percentage while doubling up Randolph in aces during the frame.
The Wildcats refused to fold in the third. Randolph tallied 11 kills and five total blocks in the set, turning a late deficit into a 24-24 tie. But out of a timeout, Lynchburg delivered. A kill by Jackson pushed the Hornets in front before Jeremiah Costello sealed the match with a service ace to cap the 26-24 finish.
Lynchburg will look to carry the momentum into its next conference matchup against Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday, Feb. 28, along with a non-conference affair against Concordia Chicago.
