FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg softball team split its road doubleheader against Mary Washington on Saturday, claiming a 4-1 victory in game one before falling 4-3 in the nightcap.
Game 1: Lynchburg 4, Mary Washington 1
The Hornets (3-3) opened the day with a complete performance in the field and at the plate.
After a scoreless first inning, Lynchburg broke through in the top of the second. Bryanna Orange led off with a double and Georgia Thompson followed with a single to put two aboard. Zoe Elliot then lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, bringing home Orange for the game's first run.
Lynchburg extended its lead in the third. A pair of free passes put two Hornets on base, and a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position before an out was recorded. Orange added to her strong start with a sacrifice fly that scored Alyssa Talayumptewa. Thompson continued her productive afternoon with her second of three hits in the opener, driving in Hailey Schildt to make it 3-0.
The Hornets tacked on another run in the fourth when Talayumptewa delivered an RBI single to score Sarah Watts.
Kate Charlton and the Lynchburg defense handled the rest. The Eagles were held without a hit through the first four innings and finished with just three on the day. Mary Washington pushed across a run in the seventh, but the late effort was not enough to overcome the deficit.

Lynchburg threatened in the third but left a runner in scoring position, and the Eagles capitalized with another run in the bottom half to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Hornets responded in the fifth. A walk and a hit-by-pitch set the table for Watts, who laced a two-run double to cut the deficit to one.In the sixth, Kalli Monahan singled to center field to bring home Schildt and even the score at 3-3.
Lynchburg had an opportunity in the seventh but stranded two runners. In the bottom of the frame, Mary Washington used a pair of doubles to manufacture the winning run and secure the walk-off victory.
