Lynchburg Drops To No. 5 Washington and Lee

Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's basketball team squared off against nationally-ranked Washington and Lee and was defeated, 67-33, on Saturday afternoon in Turner Gymnasium.

The Hornets (11-10, 4-8 ODAC) kept the game close early, trailing just 7-5 midway through the first quarter led by Kayla Terry with all five points. The No. 5 Generals (21-0, 12-0) closed the opening period on an 8-2 run, taking a 15-7 lead after 10 minutes.

Washington and Lee continued to build its advantage in the second quarter, outscoring Lynchburg 8-7 to take a 23-14 lead into halftime. Ashley Vandergrift provided a highlight with a 3-pointer off a turnover, while Kate Littlejohn added two free throws late in the half. Although the Hornets did not convert many chances from the field, they hit all four of their shots from the foul line in the first half and were stout on defense, holding WLU to .333 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes.

The Generals delivered a decisive stretch in the third quarter, outscoring Lynchburg 21-6 to extend the lead to 44-20. Kayla Sledge and Selah Parker each scored two points from the free throw line, and Audra Petty added a basket in the paint.

Lynchburg showed resilience in the fourth quarter, scoring 13 total points, but were unable to surmount the deficit. Petty led the Hornets offensively in the contest with 11 points and three rebounds, while Terry finished with five points on two-of-three shooting. Littlejohn added six points and was a force on the defensive end with four blocks and two steals, and Brooke Cason recorded three steals to go along with three assists.

Lynchburg finished the game shooting .217 percent from the field and a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line. The Hornets forced 17 turnovers and recorded six steals, but Washington and Lee held advantages in points in the paint (34-6), second-chance points (20-5), and fast-break points (12-0).

The Hornets return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. when they travel to Hollins in Roanoke, Va.
