Stevenson, Md. -- Attackman
Riley Hastings followed up his record-breaking performance against Christopher Newport with a stellar eight-point showing, but ultimately the University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team fell just short against Gettysburg, 15-13, to wrap up play in the 2026 Callum Robinson Mustang Classic on Saturday.
In the No. 4/4 Hornets (5-1) two games in as many days against top-10 ranked teams in the nation, Hastings finished with an impressive 21 points on 13 goals and eight assists.
Will Rubley and
Liam Holman showed out in today's game against the No. 9/8 Bullets (3-3). Each finished with a hat trick and Rubley added an assist to his performance.
Although Lynchburg owned a 13-10 lead at the 9:47-mark in the fourth quarter, Gettysburg rolled to end the contest with five unanswered goals, including the go-ahead goal with 1:44 remaining and an extra-man goal in the closing seconds to secure the 15-13 result.
The Hornets started quickly, opening the scoring when Hastings found the net early in the first quarter. Gettysburg answered to tie the game, but Lynchburg responded with goals from Rubley and
Spencer Vandenberg to build a 3-1 lead. After the Bullets cut the margin to one, Hastings struck again with a rare man-down goal late in the quarter to give the Hornets a 4-2 advantage at the end of the first period.
Lynchburg maintained momentum in the second quarter.
Kolbe Haug scored to extend the lead before Holman added a goal off a dish from
Cole Oprandi. Hastings continued his strong performance, scoring again before assisting Rubley on another Lynchburg goal. Rubley later converted a man-up opportunity off another Hastings assist, helping the Hornets take a 9-6 lead into halftime.
The Hornets added to their advantage in the third quarter. Hastings scored again midway through the period, and Holman followed with a man-up goal assisted by Rubley to push Lynchburg ahead 11-7 with 5:04 to go in the third. Gettysburg answered with two late goals to cut the deficit to 11-9 heading into the final period.
Lynchburg extended its lead early in the fourth quarter as Holman scored off a pass from Hastings and Hastings later finished another chance assisted by
Matej Roth, giving the Hornets a 13-10 lead. Gettysburg responded with stout defense and productive offense to seal its narrow victory.
The men's lacrosse team has concluded its play in the Callum Robinson Mustang Classic with solid performances all around against some of the best competition in the country. Lynchburg now heads into ODAC action, beginning with a road trip to Averett on Wednesday, March 18 at 7 p.m.
