SALISBURY, Md. -- The University of Lynchburg softball team split its two matchups on the second day of the Margie Knight Softball Tournament, falling to Stockton 7-5 before bouncing back with a 6-1 win over Juniata.
Game 1: Stockton 7, Lynchburg 5
Stockton struck first in the third inning, taking advantage of defensive miscues to score two unearned runs. The Ospreys added another run in the fourth to push their lead to 3-0.
Lynchburg began to chip away in the fifth. Hailey Schildt singled and later scored when Alyssa Talayumptewa doubled to left field, cutting the deficit to 3-1.
The Hornets continued their push in the sixth inning. Kalli Monahan led off with a double and later scored alongside Helen Maddux when Schildt delivered a two-run double to tie the game at 3-3.
Stockton responded with a decisive seventh inning, scoring four runs on five hits to regain control.
Lynchburg attempted a late rally in the bottom half of the inning. Talayumptewa singled and Sarah Watts doubled to put two runners in scoring position before Georgia Thompson doubled home both runners to trim the deficit to 7-5. The Hornets could not push across another run.
Talayumptewa led Lynchburg with two hits and an RBI. Schildt added two hits and two RBIs, while Thompson also drove in two runs.
Game 2: Lynchburg 6, Juniata 1
The Hornets bounced back in the afternoon matchup, using a fast start and a complete game from Chase Hartford to defeat Juniata 6-1.
Lynchburg struck first in the opening inning. Georgia Thompson doubled and later scored when Helen Maddux singled to center field. Moments later, Schildt drove in Maddux with an RBI single to give the Hornets a 2-0 lead.
The Hornets added three more runs in the second inning. Zoë Elliott walked and stole second before Talayumptewa doubled to bring her home. Later in the inning, Watts stole second and scored on a Juniata error before Thompson singled home another run to extend the lead to 5-0.
Lynchburg added an insurance run in the fifth when Monahan doubled and eventually scored on a passed ball.
Hartford handled the rest in the circle, tossing a complete game while allowing just one run on six hits and striking out two.
Thompson finished with two hits and an RBI, while Talayumptewa, Maddux, and Schildt each drove in a run.
