FOREST, Va. --Â University of Lynchburg attackman
Will Rubley has been named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
The Hornets competed in one game this week, a back-and-forth heavyweight battle against receiving-votes Denison. Lynchburg and the Big Red remained within striking distance of one another throughout the contest, with neither team leading by more than three goals at any point. Rubley and the Hornets ultimately captured a 14-13 victory filled with late-game dramatics.Â
With under a minute remaining, Lynchburg gained possession in a tied game. As time wound down, the Hornets placed their trust in the sophomore to initiate the offense from X. The Vienna, Virginia native curled around the crease, absorbed a heavy hit from a Big Red defender, and buried the game-winning goal as he fell to the turf with five seconds remaining.
Rubley's strike secured Lynchburg's fourth victory of the season, keeping the Hornets unbeaten. In the process, he also recorded his third hat trick of the year, bringing his season total to 15 goals on 17 shots.
Rubley becomes the third Hornet to earn an ODAC weekly award this season and collects the first of his collegiate career.
Lynchburg returns to action this weekend with a pair of nationally ranked opponents on the schedule, traveling to the Mustang Classic to face No. 2 Christopher Newport and No. 10 Gettysburg.
