Baseball vs. Virginia Wesleyan Suspended Due To Weather, Set To Continue April 15

Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg baseball team competed for three innings against Virginia Wesleyan and led 19-0 before play was officially suspended due to consistent lightning in the area at Worthington Field on the campus of Liberty University.

The No. 2/2 Hornets were slated to play the Marlins on James C. Fox Field at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 1. Due to heavy precipitation, the game was moved to the turf of Worthington Field and began play at 6:15 p.m. After the first inning, the squads went into the locker room after lightning struck within the area. Following a delay, the teams regathered on the field to continue play. Upon the completion of the third inning, lightning returned to the area and the game was officially suspended to be played later in the season. When the Hornets travel to Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday, April 15, the game will be continued where it left off. After that game is complete, the squads will face again for the originally-scheduled game on that date.

Before play was suspended, Lynchburg put on a barrage of runs in the first two innings - 10 in the first frame and nine in the second. The Marlins went three up-three down to start the contest. Brandon Garcia started things off with a walk, then scored off an RBI triple from Benton Jones. Jack Pokorak knocked one to right field for a sacrifice fly to score Jones.

Quinn Madden singled, then both Joe Munitz and Sean Pokorak were walked, effectively loading the bases. Kyle Flora singled down the third base line and scored Madden. Lynchburg scored two more as Eli Carroll and Kyle Moshier were both hit by pitches to push two across the plate. Garcia came back up and hit a sac fly to score Flora. Jones crushed an RBI double to score Carroll, then Moshier scored on a wild pitch. Jack Pokorak finished the incredible frame by demolishing the rock to the left side for a two-run homer.

After another three batter inning for VWU, the Hornets picked up right where they left off. The first three batters of the frame loaded the bases with no outs, then both Carroll and Moshier were walked to add two to the scoreboard. Garcia reached on a fielder's choice and scored Flora, then Jones tallied another double to score both Garcia and Carroll. Following a Jack Pokorak walk, Madden reached on a throwing error and allowed Jones to score. Sean Pokorak hit an RBI single, then Flora notched an RBI on a walk and Moshier got hit by a pitch to score the final run of the frame.

Lynchburg is right back at it tomorrow, taking on Johnson & Wales (NC) in Matthews, N.C. at Colonel Francis R. Beatty Park at 1 p.m.
