LEXINGTON, Va. --The University of Lynchburg women's lacrosse team fell on the road Saturday afternoon, dropping an ODAC matchup to Washington and Lee, 22-4.
McKenna Steinau led the Hornets offensively with two goals on six shots, while Hayli Williams and Neely Morris each added a score. Lynchburg goalkeeper Olivia Owings recorded eight saves in the full 60 minutes of action.
Lynchburg (10-5, 4-3 ODAC) opened the contest battling early, but Washington and Lee (13-2, 8-0 ODAC) jumped out to a quick advantage with four goals in the opening seven minutes. Steinau got the Hornets on the board midway through the first quarter, and Morris added a free-position goal in the final seconds to trim the deficit to 8-2 after one.
The Generals continued their offensive surge in the second quarter, but Lynchburg found moments of success in the middle portion of the frame. Williams scored to halt a scoring run, and Steinau added her second of the day on a free-position opportunity to make it 11-4 with just over eight minutes remaining in the half.
Washington and Lee responded with four more goals before the break to take a 15-4 lead into halftime, and the Hornets were unable to generate additional offense over the final two quarters.
Despite the final score, Lynchburg was efficient in transition, converting all 12 of its clear attempts and matching Washington and Lee with 14 draw controls. The Hornets also forced eight turnovers and went 2-for-5 on free-position chances.
Lynchburg will look to bounce back in its next contest in a non-conference matchup against Warren Wilson on Tuesday, April 21.Â
