Softball Splits Midweek Matchup Against Averett

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg softball team split a doubleheader with Averett on Tuesday afternoon at Moon Field, rallying for a walk-off victory in game one before dropping the nightcap.

Game One: Lynchburg 5, Averett 4

The Hornets (24-14, 13-5 ODAC) opened the day with a dramatic 5-4 win over the Cougars (22-16, 7-11 ODAC), scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh to complete the comeback.

Trailing 4-1 entering the final frame, Lynchburg loaded the bases before capitalizing on an error to bring in a run. Helen Maddux then delivered the decisive blow, launching a three-run home run to secure the walk-off victory.

Maddux finished with two hits and two RBI, while Georgia Thompson went 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Alex Love added a pair of hits and a run, helping pace a six-hit effort for the Hornets.

Kate Charlton earned the complete-game win in the circle, allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits across seven innings.

Game One: Lynchburg 7, Averett 9

In game two, Lynchburg jumped out to an early lead but could not hold off a late push from Averett, falling 9-7.

The Hornets plated three runs in the first inning, highlighted by a two-run single from Helen Maddux and an RBI double from Sydney Bryant. Lynchburg added single runs in the third, fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, but Averett used a four-run fifth and a three-run seventh to pull ahead.

Maddux continued her strong day at the plate, finishing with two hits and two RBI, while Alyssa Talayumptewa added two hits and two RBI. Georgia Thompson recorded three hits, and Sarah Watts reached base three times with a hit and two walks while driving in a run.

Lynchburg totaled 11 hits in the second game but was unable to overcome Averett's late offensive surge.

The Hornets split the doubleheader after a walk-off win in game one and a back-and-forth battle in game two.
