Danville, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's tennis team squared off against Averett in the quarterfinal round of the ODAC tournament and fell, 4-1, on Tuesday afternoon.
The Hornets came into the conference tournament as the six seed and matched up against third-seeded Averett. The squad concluded the season with an 8-9 overall record and a 4-4 record against ODAC opponents. Throughout the the season, the team notched seven ODAC Player of the Week awards, the most in a single season in program history.
Doubles play of today's match opened the match, and Averett secured the point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3.
Ricards Spaks and Patricio Zepeda were defeated 6-4 at No. 1 doubles, while
Alvaro Quiroga Amaya and
Alexandre Gaboardi fell 6-3 at No. 3. The No. 2 doubles match, featuring
Nicholas Pierreux and
Daniel Gomes, was unfinished at 5-4.
In singles, Lynchburg earned its point at the top of the lineup.
Ricards Spaks recorded a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles. Averett claimed the remaining completed matches, including a three-set win at No. 2 singles, where
Nicholas Pierreux fell 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
At No. 5 singles,
Alvaro Quiroga Amaya was defeated 6-2, 6-3, and
Sebastian Soria dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision at No. 6. Two singles matches were left unfinished, with
Alexandre Gaboardi trailing at No. 3 and
Daniel Gomes competing in a third set at No. 4 when play concluded.
With Averett securing the doubles point and three completed singles matches, the contest ended at 4-1. Lynchburg's point came from Spaks' straight-set victory at No. 1, while several matches remained in progress at the time of the decision.
