COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. -- The University of Lynchburg field hockey team suffered its second consecutive loss Saturday afternoon, dropping a 2-1 decision to Ursinus at Snell Field. The Hornets move to 2-3 on the season, while the Bears remain unbeaten at 4-0.
Ursinus controlled much of the opening quarter, generating nine shots and six penalty corners. Marie Brainard broke through for the Bears to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage, while Lynchburg goalkeeper Shay Schoones helped limit the damage with five saves in the period.
Lynchburg answered early in the second quarter. Allie Freeman found the back of the cage off an assist from Grace Peterson to bring the Hornets level at 1-1. The tie was short-lived, however, as Brainard responded with her second goal of the contest to put Ursinus back in front, 2-1.
The Hornets generated their strongest offensive pressure after halftime, matching Ursinus with three shots in the third quarter. Taylor Secrist accounted for all three Lynchburg attempts, putting two on cage, but Ursinus goalkeeper Elise Martin turned both away to preserve the one-goal advantage.
Ursinus held Lynchburg without a shot in the fourth quarter and closed out the 2-1 victory. The Bears finished with a 23-6 advantage in shots and a 14-4 edge in penalty corners. Schoones recorded 13 saves in goal for Lynchburg, while Avery Watkins added a defensive save. Freeman, Peterson and Secrist accounted for Lynchburg's four shots on goal.
Lynchburg continues its Pennsylvania road trip Sunday against No. 20 Dickinson in Carlisle, Pa.
