Carlisle, Pa. -- The University of Lynchburg field hockey team secured a nationally-ranked top-20 win against Dickinson, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Biddle Field Complex.

Sofia Boon gave the No. 17 Hornets (3-3) the lead over the No. 20 Red Devils (1-3) just 4:47 into the game, scoring an unassisted goal for her first goal of the contest. Lynchburg took that 1-0 advantage into halftime after neither team scored during the second quarter.

Dickinson applied pressure throughout the final three periods, but goalkeeper Shay Schoones kept the hosts off the scoreboard. Schoones made three saves in the second quarter and three more in the third as Lynchburg maintained its one-goal lead. She then recorded four saves during the fourth quarter to complete the shutout.

Lynchburg doubled its advantage at the 46:06 mark. Taylor Secrist scored off an assist from Allie Freeman, giving Lynchburg a 2-0 lead early in the fourth quarter. Sydney Cappallo also placed a shot on goal during the period, forcing a save from Dickinson goalkeeper Arden Cook.

Schoones finished with 12 saves across the full 60 minutes and earned the win, improving her record to 3-3. She stopped two shots in the first quarter, three in the second, three in the third and four in the fourth.

Dickinson finished with a 14-7 advantage in total shots and placed 12 attempts on goal. Lynchburg put three of its seven shots on target, with Boon, Secrist and Cappallo each recording one. Callie Short took two shots, while Khanyisile Mzizi also had an attempt.

Dickinson held a 10-4 advantage in penalty corners, including four during the final quarter. Lynchburg recorded one corner in the first quarter, two in the second and one in the fourth while scoring once in both the opening and closing periods.

Next up, the Hornets continue their road stand with a trip to Maine to take on No. 10 Bates in Lewiston on Saturday, September 19 at 10:30 a.m., then Southern Maine in Gorham on Sunday, September 20 at noon.
