LEWISTON, Maine -- The University of Lynchburg field hockey team battled Bates into overtime before the Bobcats secured a 2-1 victory Saturday afternoon at Campus Ave. Field.
The two sides entered halftime scoreless after trading stretches of offensive pressure. Bates generated four shots in the opening quarter, but goalkeeper Shay Schoones turned away all three attempts that reached the cage. Lynchburg responded with its strongest offensive stretch of the first half in the second quarter, outshooting the Bobcats 6-1 and earning three penalty corners.
Bates opened the scoring in the third quarter when Bella Bigelow converted a penalty stroke. Lynchburg answered almost immediately as Sydney Cappallo found the back of the cage for her sixth goal of the season, leveling the contest at 1-1.
The Hornets generated a pair of penalty corners and two shots in the fourth quarter, but neither side could break the deadlock before the end of regulation. Cappallo put Lynchburg's lone shot on goal of the period on cage, while Schoones made another save at the other end.
Bates controlled the early stages of overtime, producing three shots and a penalty corner. Schoones denied the Bobcats' first attempt before Sammy Logan eventually scored the game-winner off an assist from Sophie O'Sullivan to give Bates the 2-1 victory.
Schoones finished with 10 saves for Lynchburg. The Hornets recorded 10 shots, placing four on goal, and held a 7-4 advantage in penalty corners. Bates finished with 17 shots, including 12 on target. Cappallo led Lynchburg with two shots on goal and the team's lone goal.
The Hornets look to regroup with a quick turnaround for a matchup with Southern Maine tomorrow, Sept. 20, in Gorham, Maine.
