GORHAM, Maine --Â The University of Lynchburg field hockey team closed its weekend in Maine with a dramatic 3-2 double-overtime victory over Southern Maine on Sunday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
Lynchburg controlled the attack from the opening quarter, generating six shots and four penalty corners while holding Southern Maine without a shot. Lauren Mark broke through for the Hornets with her first goal of the season to give Lynchburg an early 1-0 advantage.
The Hornets continued to apply pressure in the second quarter, adding seven more shots and four penalty corners. Southern Maine goalkeeper Haylee Romasco and the Huskies' defense kept Lynchburg from extending the lead, while Shay Schoones made her first save of the afternoon on Southern Maine's lone shot of the period.
Lynchburg doubled its advantage in the third quarter when Sydney Cappallo found the cage for her seventh goal of the season off an assist from Sofia Boon. The Hornets carried the 2-0 lead into the final quarter after limiting Southern Maine to just one shot in the third.
Southern Maine answered with two goals in quick succession during the fourth quarter. Eliza Rogers cut the Lynchburg advantage in half off an assist from Mackenzie Hall before Izzy Folsom evened the contest at 2-2. The Hornets responded with heavy pressure the rest of the period, finishing the quarter with eight shots and eight penalty corners, but could not reclaim the lead before regulation ended.
Lynchburg continued to generate opportunities in the first overtime, recording five shots while Schoones made a save on Southern Maine's only shot on goal of the period. The Hornets then held the Huskies without a shot in the second overtime and produced six attempts of their own. After another stretch of Lynchburg pressure, Tatum Humphries converted a penalty stroke to secure the 3-2 victory.
The Hornets finished with a 36-9 advantage in shots and a 19-2 edge in penalty corners. Khanyisile Mzizi led Lynchburg with 10 shots, all on goal, while Allie Freeman added seven shots and Grace Peterson and Mark each recorded five. Schoones made four saves in the cage as Lynchburg improved to 4-4 on the season.
