LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg field hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision to Rowan on Saturday at Shellenberger Field.
Rowan struck first in the opening quarter, as Sydney Kowalczyk put the Profs ahead to give the visitors an early 1-0 advantage. Lynchburg continued to work its way into the contest and found the equalizer late in the second quarter.
Khanyisile Mzizi brought the Hornets level off an assist from Allie Freeman, sending the game into halftime tied at one apiece.
Neither side was able to break through in the third quarter. Lynchburg generated opportunities throughout the period, including a shot on goal from Grace Peterson, while Shay Schoones helped keep Rowan off the board with multiple saves.
The Hornets continued to push forward in the fourth quarter, earning a pair of penalty corners and putting another attempt on frame from Freeman. Rowan eventually regained the lead late in the contest, as Mia Foti finished a chance off a penalty corner with Aurelia McManis providing the assist.
Lynchburg finished the afternoon with nine shots, placing five on goal, while Rowan recorded 16 shots and 11 attempts on target. Schoones finished with nine saves in goal for the Hornets. Mzizi led Lynchburg with two shots on goal, while Freeman recorded two shots and the assist on Lynchburg's lone goal.Â
The Hornets will return to Shellenberger Field tomorrow for a matchup against the Sewanee Tigers in their final nonconference contest of the regular season.
