Rustburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg IHSA team opened competition at home on Saturday and had the privilege of hosting its first ever Tournament of Champions, fielding Team Black and Team Red. Team Black captured first place with 50 points, while Team Red totaled 31 points and was listed seventh in the final placements.

Lynchburg started the day by sweeping the Open Fences classes. McKenzie Burch took first in Open Fences A, while Amaya Bellfield followed with a victory in Open Fences B. Bellfield continued her success with another first-place result in Open Flat A, and Burch placed fourth in Open Flat B. 

In Intermediate Fences, Ashby Watts finished third in the A section before Molly McGarvey won the B section. On the flat, Emily Futty earned third in Intermediate Flat A, while Jessica McElhaney placed second in Intermediate Flat B. 

The Limit division added more points to Lynchburg's totals. Ruby Suess placed third in Limit Fences A, and McElhaney won Limit Fences B. Lynchburg then recorded a second-place finish from Clair Humphreys in Limit Flat A and another victory from Adam Matejko in Limit Flat B. 

Lynchburg closed out the scored classes with a third-place finish from Lainey Dickens in Novice A and a win from Sydney Remington in Novice B. Amaya Shuler also placed fourth in Introductory B. Team Black earned seven points in Open Fences, Open Flat, Intermediate Fences, Limit Fences, Limit Flat and Novice on its way to 50 total points and first place. Team Red added first-place points in Open Fences and finished the competition with 31 points.

Next up for the IHSA squad is the Hollins IHSA on Saturday, October 3 and Sunday, October 4 in Roanoke, Va.
