WINCHESTER, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg field hockey team picked up its first win of the season with a 9-1 victory over Thomas College on Friday at Aikens Stadium. The Hornets improved to 1-1 on the season.
Lynchburg jumped out to an early lead behind goals from Callie Short and Sofia Boon. Short opened the scoring mid way through the first quarter off an assist from Khanyisile Mzizi before Boon doubled the advantage just over a minute later with Allie Freeman providing the assist.
The Hornets broke the game open with four goals in the second quarter. Boon scored twice to complete her hat trick, while Taylor Secrist and Short also found the back of the cage to give Lynchburg a 6-0 advantage at halftime. Aliyah Bhatti added Lynchburg's seventh goal in the third quarter before Thomas got on the board with a goal from Samantha Thebarge.
Sydney Cappallo and Short added two more goals in the fourth quarter, with Short completing a hat trick of her own for the final goal of the affair. Mzizi finished with three assists, while Freeman and Secrist each recorded two.
Lynchburg controlled the statistical battle with a 48-6 advantage in shots, including a 33-5 edge in shots on goal. The Hornets also earned 26 penalty corners compared with four for Thomas. Shay Schoones and Lila Seifert split time in goal, combining for four saves.
Lynchburg continues their opening week road stand in Winchester with another non-conference bout against Denison on Sunday, Sept. 6, at 11 a.m..
