Lynchburg Splits Doubleheader with Ferrum
FERRUM, VA – The Lynchburg College baseball team split a doubleheader with Ferrum College on Tuesday, winning the first game 7-6 and dropping the second 3-2, in non-conference action.
The Hornets took a 2-0 lead in the first game which held until Ferrum scored four runs in the fourth inning to take a two-run lead. LC responded in the bottom of the sixth frame with five runs. Junior Ragan Rudisill (Forest, VA/Jefferson Forest) singled in a run and junior Richard Palase (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) drew a bases-loaded walk in the inning. Senior Mike Walters (Manassas, VA/Osbourn) hit a two-RBI single and sophomore Michael Burks (Frederick, MD/Tuscarora) scored on a wild pitch to make it a 7-4 lead going into the top of the seventh.
Lynchburg yielded two Ferrum runs in the top of the seventh, but junior Jared Millner (Forest, VA/Jefferson Forest) got the final out to end the game registering the save. Senior Jordan Watkins (Freeland, MD/Hereford) pitched six innings earning the win.
Justin Puentes earned the loss for the Panthers in the first game of the twinbill.
Ferrum went up 3-0 in the second game until Lynchburg scored one in the fifth. Sophomore Dan Savage (Ashburn, VA/Paul VI) hit a sacrifice fly to put the Hornets on the board. The Panthers held Lynchburg to just one more run in the seventh after Rudisill hit a RBI-single.
Starting pitcher for Ferrum (11-12), Morgan Boles pitched all seven innings and was able to retire Lynchburg in the seventh and final inning to end the game.
Freshman Michael Mansfield (Richmond, VA/Henrico) took the loss for the Hornets yet only gave up two hits and three runs on the evening. Junior Robert Garrett (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) pitched three and two-thirds innings of relief and only gave up three hits and no runs while striking out four.
Lynchburg (13-10) will host Averett University on Thursday at Lynchburg City Stadium at 6 pm.
