Lynchburg Sweeps Washington & Lee to Remain Perfect in Conference
LEXINGTON, VA – Coming off a tough loss to Methodist University on Wednesday, the Lynchburg College baseball team responded by sweeping Washington & Lee University in a double-header, winning 5-0 and 9-6 on Saturday in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play.
Sophomore designated hitter Brock Shiflett (Henrico, VA/Steward School) went 2-5 with two RBI and sophomore Michael Kenah (Clifton, VA/Robinson) added two RBI in the first game. Lynchburg outhit the Generals 10-2 with starting pitcher Matt Morgan (Bedford, VA/Liberty) going eight and one-thirds innings giving up two hits and walking two while striking out seven. Morgan is now 3-0 on the season.
Sophomore relief pitcher Jared Millner (Forest, VA/Jefferson Forest) retired the last two batters for the Hornets.
Lynchburg scored twice in the first inning, with one run coming from a wild pitch and the second coming from a groundout RBI from Kenah. A sacrifice fly to right field from Kenah in the third and a two RBI single from Shiflett in the fourth inning gave Lynchburg the 5-0 lead.
Roger Strong (2-2), starting pitcher for the Generals, went two innings, giving up seven hits and five runs.
The Hornets raced to an early 6-0 lead in the third inning of the second game, eventually winning 9-6. Kenah went 2-5 with two RBI and sophomore Michael Del Buono (Clifton, VA/Robinson) went 3-5 with two RBI in the game.
Lynchburg went up 1-0 with a RBI groundout from freshman Jake Tanner (Big Island, VA/Liberty) in the second. Following two runs to begin the third inning, Kenah homered giving Lynchburg a 5-0 lead. An error drove in another run, to put Lynchburg ahead 6-0.
The Generals added two in the bottom of the third before Del Buono answered in the top of the fourth with a two-RBI single. W&L narrowed the Lynchburg lead to 8-6 going into the top of the ninth but junior Ragan Rudisill (Forest, VA/Jefferson Forest) scored on an error to put Lynchburg up for good, winning 9-6.
Freshman Michael Mansfield (Richmond, VA/Henrico) started the game, going four and a third innings, giving up seven hits. Fellow freshman James Womack (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) pitched two and a third innings getting the win, giving up two runs off two hits.
Washington & Lee (4-6/2-2 ODAC) pitcher Jody Davis earned the loss.
Lynchburg (7-6/4-0 ODAC) hosts Penn. State-Beaver on Tuesday in a double-header beginning at noon.
