Mary Washington Defeats LC Field Hockey 3-1

FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The University of Mary Washington scored the game's last three goals Thursday to defeat #13 Lynchburg College 3-1 in non-conference action and the season opener for both teams.

Hornet junior attack Lindsay Leonard opened the scoring eight minutes before intermission on a feed from senior Deanna Smith. Lisa Charney answered just before halftime to tie the game at one all.

Freshman forward Courtney Rampey scored a pair of second-half scores to make a winner of Lindsey Elliott, making her head coaching debut at UMW.

The Eagles led in shots, 18-8, and each team had nine penalty corners. Senior Tiffany Frye (Williamsburg, VA/Bruton) made seven saves for LC while her counterpart Claire Gianelle had four saves. The game didn't begin until 5:15, after being originally slated for 4 p.m.

 The Hornets (0-1) host DePauw College Friday evening at 6 p.m. on Shellenberger Field.
