LC Baseball Defeats Stevenson 11-8 in Home Opener

LYNCHBURG, VA – Using a three-run seventh inning, the Lynchburg College baseball team defeated Stevenson University in a shootout on Tuesday afternoon 11-8 in non-conference play.

Junior Michael Del Buono led the Hornets with four RBI which included a triple and a two-run single. Sophomore Zach Fitzpatrick added two RBI while junior Ashton Paige, senior Richard Palase and freshman JP Nicholas, Jr. each tallied an RBI each as well.

Stevenson scored in the first inning to take an initial 1-0 lead before Del Buono tripled in the bottom of the frame to score Palase. After the Mustangs added another run in the top of the second, LC scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-2 advantage. Nicholas singled in sophomore Dustin Arrowood while Paige and Palase each batted in a run.

With the Hornets leading by two in the top of the third, Stevenson tallied four runs and then added another in the top of the fifth to take a 7-4 lead. Lynchburg battled back in the bottom of the sixth with three runs to tie the game. Fitzpatrick singled in Nicholas and Del Buono singled in two more to knot the game at seven.

In the seventh, Arrowood homered to right field before Fitzpatrick knocked in Nicholas for another run. Del Buono added another RBI off a hit by pitch to give the Hornets the 10-7 lead in the bottom of the inning. Stevenson added a run in the eighth to narrow the gap to two, but Arrowood scored off a Mustangs error, helping lead to an 11-8 LC victory.

Sophomore Trevor Johnston got the starting nod for the Hornets, before giving way to freshman Matt Outman who gave up three hits and one run in four innings. Freshman Charlie Thieringer earned the win (1-0) while sophomore Michael Mansfield pitched the ninth for his first save of the year.

Zac Stavish knocked in four RBI for Stevenson (1-2). Tim Pyle took the loss for the Mustangs.

Lynchburg heads to Methodist University this weekend to play Birmingham Southern College on Friday at 1 p.m.
