Offense Propels Lynchburg Baseball in Doubleheader Sweep Over Virginia Wesleyan

LYNCHBURG, VA – The bats came alive for the Lynchburg College baseball team on Tuesday as the Hornets swept Virginia Wesleyan College in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader. LC won the first game 10-3 while taking the second game 10-2.

In the first game, Lynchburg piled on six runs in the bottom of the first frame alone. Junior Michael Del Buono, junior Dan Savage, freshman Dustin Arrowood and freshman Lincoln Evans each had an RBI in the inning, along with junior Ashton Paige who had a two-RBI double.

The Hornets then added two runs in the bottom of the second after a two-run single from Arrowood to lead 8-0. Virginia Wesleyan added a run in the third, but Lynchburg countered with two more runs in the bottom of the inning of a Del Buono single for a 10-1 advantage.

VWC put up two runs in the top of the fifth frame, but LC cruised to a 10-3 victory. Senior Robert Garrett earned the win, pitching five innings and only giving up three runs while striking out five. Freshman Charlie Thieringer pitched four innings of relief, relinquishing two hits and no runs.

Justin Payne took the loss while Brett Sutryk, Brryant Liberta and Matt Ittner each had an RBI for Virginia Wesleyan.

Game two featured more offense for Lynchburg, as LC dropped eight runs in the bottom of the second. Trailing 2-0, freshman Pat Harris doubled in a run to start the scoring. Senior Richard Palase clubbed a double for two RBI while sophomore Zach Fitzpatrick, Del Buono, and freshman Jay Kenyon each added more runs. Fitzpatrick and Kenyon both had two-RBI hits.

LC picked up two more scores in the eighth off a double from junior Michael Kenah and a sacrifice fly from Del Buono, eventually winning 10-2.

Freshman Matt Outman pitched seven innings, earning the win while giving up two runs and five hits. Fellow freshman Martin Henderlite picked up two innings of relief, allowing only one hit.

Anthony Siracusa took the loss for the Marlins (5-13/1-5 ODAC) on the hill.
