Hornets Open Home Slate with Victory over Stevenson, Saturday DH Moved

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College baseball team rode the strength of three pitchers en route to a 4-0 shutout of Stevenson University on Wednesday afternoon at Fox Field.

Freshman Matt Matthews got the start for the Hornets, pitching three solid innings before running into trouble in the fourth inning. He faced one batter over the minimum in his first two innings of work, including two strikeouts.

The Hornets got on the board in support of Matthews in the second inning as senior Dan Savage led off with a single to left field. A walk to junior Dustin Arrowood allowed junior Jake Tanner to sacrifice the two into scoring position where a sacrifice fly by sophomore Pat Harris plated Savage. Senior catcher Michael Burks doubled home Arrowood in the subsequent at-bat.

The Mustangs challenged the Hornet lead in the fourth as senior Matt Bratter doubled down the left field line with one out. Tom Goulian reached on an error, putting runners on the corners, and after senior Heath Johnson was hit by a pitch, LC went to the bullpen.

Entering with one out and the bases loaded, junior Trevor Johnston induced a groundball to Arrowood who forced Bratter at home. Chris DeFeo flew out to center to end the threat.

Lynchburg added an insurance run apiece in the seventh and eighth innings. Sophomore Lincoln Evans singled to lead off the seventh and advanced on two wild pitches before scoring on a triple to right field by senior Ashton Paige.

An RBI single by sophomore pinch hitter Rob Tomasulo scored Arrowood in the eighth for the Hornets' fourth run.

Lynchburg (3-3) was led by a 2-for-3 showing with an RBI from Paige. Savage added two hits and a run scored, while Arrowood scored twice.

The trio of Matthews, Johnston, and freshman Dylan Ward dealt nine shutout innings while striking out four Mustangs.

Senior Josh Morris, sophomore Troy Miller, and Bratter each had two hits for Stevenson (0-1)

Lynchburg's doubleheader for Saturday, February 23 against York (Pa.) College (0-0) has been moved to Sunday, February 24 due to weather expected over the weekend. First pitch will remain at noon.
