Hornets Survive OT Scare, Win 11-10 at Marymount

ARLINGTON, VA – The Lynchburg College women's lacrosse team relinquished a late five-goal lead and needed overtime to defeat Marymount (Va.) University 11-10 in non-conference action on Wednesday.

The Hornets stormed out to a quick three goal lead, with Carley Dobson, Sarah Shannon, and Kendall Adkin all scoring in the first minute.  MU called a timeout to stem the tide, but Katherine Francis scored next for LC to push the advantage to four with 26 minutes left in the half.

Marymount responded with the next two tallies, one each by Megan McGuirk and Mary Ellen Whitlock, with Whitlock's coming on a free position shot.  Lynchburg pushed the lead back up to four, with free position goals coming from Adkin and Francis, but once again the Saints countered with two more goals.  Rachel Duff scored her first of the afternoon off the feed from McGuirk and Whitlock tallied her second of the game.  However, Dobson put another shot in the back of the net, with Adkin getting the assist, as the Hornets went into the half with a 7-4 lead.

LC came out in the second, the same way the first ended.  Adkin registered her third to complete the hat-trick a few minutes in and Ryland Scott scored her first of the game at 21:03.  Chelsea Ritter then answered for MU, which came from Molly Maher.  Bri Slate countered with her first of the game to once again give Lynchburg a five-goal lead.

However, this would be the time for MU to make its run.  The Saints answered with two goals to cut the deficit to three with a little over six minutes remaining.  After an LC yellow card yielded a free position shot, and Whitlock scored her third of the game.   She then added her fourth on another free position shot, and with 1:47 on the clock Stephanie Keane scored after a Hornet penalty to tie the game.  Each team had good opportunities to finish the game in regulation, including a Saints free position shot with three seconds left, but overtime would be needed.

In the first three-minute period, Francis scored her third of the day on a free position shot to give Lynchburg the lead.  Goalie Hailey Bossert made two big saves in the period, including one on a free position shot, to preserve the lead.

After the teams switched sides, Bossert once again stopped a free position attempt by Whitlock.  The Saints hit the post on their last chance and LC scooped up the ball and held on for the win.

Both goalies were important in the contest as Kiki Niebuhr made 12 stops for the Saints (4-2) and Bossert had 15 in the afternoon.  Marymount won 15 draw controls compared to 11 of LC, with Whitlock grabbing a game-high six.

Lynchburg (4-3) returns to Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action this weekend.  The Hornets host the Vixens of Sweet Briar College on Saturday with game time set for 1 p.m.
