Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's lacrosse team squared off against Eastern Mennonite on Shellenberger Field for the team's senior day and stood victorious, 23-1, on Saturday afternoon.
The Hornets (9-2, 3-0 ODAC) took control against the Royals (0-10, 0-4) early, scoring the first five goals of the game.
Sydney Dumas opened the scoring, followed by goals from
Neely Morris,
Megan Wheeler, and
McKenna Steinau. After Eastern Mennonite got on the board to make it 5-1, Lynchburg responded with two more goals from Steinau and
Isabella Vogel to take a 7-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Lynchburg continued to build its advantage in the second quarter with seven goals.
Lily Messineo opened the period with a goal, and
Mya Hausauer followed off an assist from Messineo.
Gabriella Strano and
Taylor Daugherty each added goals, while
Emma Timberg and
Carlie Jackson contributed during the run. Dumas capped the half with her third goal to give the Hornets a 14-1 lead at the break.
The Hornets maintained their momentum in the third quarter, scoring five more times.
Madison Stewart opened the period off an assist from
Isabella Vogel, and
Hayli Williams followed with a goal. Messineo and Hausauer each added their second goals of the game, and
Virginia Heffernan closed the quarter with a goal to push the lead to 19-1.
Lynchburg added four goals in the fourth quarter to complete the 23-1 victory.
Reilly Dinelli scored early off an assist from Morris, and Carmen Nicolás converted a free-position opportunity. Stewart added her second goal, and
Catie Babines closed the scoring with a goal assisted by
Chastity Koerner.
Dumas led Lynchburg with three goals, while Messineo recorded two goals and two assists. Morris and Vogel each tallied two assists as the Hornets finished with 10 assists on 23 goals. Lynchburg outshot Eastern Mennonite 35-11, held a 17-6 edge in ground balls, and controlled 16 draws in the win.
The Hornets are set for their next contest against Randolph-Macon at home on Wednesday, March 25 at 7 p.m.
