SALEM, Va. -- The Lynchburg Hornets women's lacrosse team fell on the road in an ODAC affair to the Roanoke Maroons, 14-9 Saturday afternoon.
Sydney Dumas, Elizabeth Poitras, and McKenna Steinau each led the Hornets with two goals apiece, while Steinau added an assist for a team-high three points. Emmy Clay, Isabella Vogel, and Lily Messineo each found the back of the net once, with Messineo and Neely Morris contributing assists. Morris finished with a team-best two assists. Olivia Owings made seven saves in goal.
Roanoke opened the game with a dominant start, scoring the first four goals in a span of just over four minutes. Lynchburg got on the board at the 9:34 mark with a free-position goal from Isabella Vogel to make it 4-1. The Maroons added three more goals to take a 7-1 lead after one.
Lynchburg bounced back with a quick response, outscoring Roanoke 3-1 in the next frame. Emmy Clay opened the scoring with a man-up goal off an assist from McKenna Steinau. Sydney Dumas added back-to-back free-position goals at 6:59 and 2:09, trimming the deficit to 8-4 heading into halftime.
Roanoke extended its lead in the third, holding Lynchburg scoreless while adding three goals to push the margin to 11-4.
The Hornets mounted a late push in the final period, scoring five times. Steinau opened the scoring with a man-up free-position goal, and Elizabeth Poitras followed with a goal off a Lily Messineo assist. Steinau added another unassisted tally to cut the deficit to 11-7. After Roanoke answered, Messineo scored off a pass from Neely Morris to make it 12-8. Roanoke added two late goals before Poitras closed the scoring with 41 seconds remaining on an assist from Morris.
Roanoke finished with a 31-23 edge in shots, while Lynchburg converted 4-of-8 free-position attempts.
The Hornets return to play on April 8 when they play host to the Guilford Quakers.
