LYNCHBURG, Va. — The University of Lynchburg women's lacrosse team fell to Randolph-Macon, 12-8, Wednesday evening at Shellenberger Field.
Lynchburg (8-3, 2-1 ODAC) was led by McKenna Steinau with four goals on eight shots, adding four draw controls and two ground balls. Sydney Dumas recorded three goals and one assist with seven shots, while Lily Messineo added one goal. Emmy Clay controlled four draws, and Neely Morris contributed two ground balls and a caused turnover. Goalkeeper Olivia Owings made six saves.
Randolph-Macon (7-3, 1-1 ODAC) opened the scoring at 13:08 before Lynchburg answered with back-to-back goals from Dumas and Steinau to take a 2-1 lead. The Yellow Jackets responded with consecutive goals to regain the advantage, but Dumas tied the game at 3-3 with 2:28 remaining. Randolph-Macon scored in the final minute to take a 4-3 lead after one. The Yellow Jackets outshot Lynchburg 7-5 in the quarter.
Randolph-Macon extended the lead early in the second quarter with a free-position goal at 14:04. Steinau answered midway through the period with an unassisted goal at 7:34 to bring Lynchburg within one. Both defenses settled in over the remainder of the quarter, as Randolph-Macon held a 6-5 edge in shots, maintaining a 5-4 lead at halftime.
Randolph-Macon used a 3-0 run early in the third quarter to push the lead to 7-4. Messineo stopped the run at 10:37, but Randolph-Macon answered to maintain control. Dumas converted a free-position attempt at 4:47 to cut the deficit to two, but a late goal gave Randolph-Macon a 9-6 advantage entering the fourth. The Yellow Jackets held a 7-3 shot advantage in the quarter.
Steinau opened the fourth-quarter scoring at 9:53 to bring Lynchburg within two. After a Randolph-Macon goal, Steinau scored again on a man-up free-position opportunity at 7:53 to make it 10-8. Randolph-Macon closed the game with two late man-up goals to seal the 12-8 result. Lynchburg out-shot Randolph-Macon 6-4 in the final quarter but could not overcome the deficit.
