Clutch Hitting Leads Hornets to Doubleheader Sweep of SVU

LYNCHBURG, VA—The Lynchburg College baseball team picked up timely hitting in both games of Saturday's doubleheader, defeating Southern Virginia University by scores of 5-4 and 5-3 in two seven-inning non-conference contests.

Lynchburg trailed 4-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning of game one before plating three runs, bringing the game within striking distance for the seventh.

Senior Brock Shiflett jumpstarted the Hornet momentum with two outs, launching his team-leading fourth home run of the year to cut the lead to 4-1. Lynchburg continued to attack, as Southern Virginia struggled to pick up the final four outs of the game. Senior Dan Savage singled to center field, scoring on a double to right by sophomore Joe Rogers. A singled by junior Dustin Arrowood rounded out the inning for LC, cutting to deficit to one run at 4-3.

Sophomore Brandon Miller worked around two hits in the seventh to set the Knights down without scoring.

Lynchburg sophomore Rob Tomasulo led off the Hornet seventh with a single in front of a sophomore Lincoln Evans walk and senior Ashton Paige single that loaded the bases. Following a fly out, Shiflett worked a walk to tie up the game. Savage stepped into the box and lined a ball down the right-field line to score Evans and take game one for LC.

The Hornets struck first in game two with a solo homer from Shiflett in the first. It was the second time this season that the senior has hit multiple homers on the same day.

Lynchburg trailed 2-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth after giving up two runs in the second. Savage led off the fourth with a single before moving to second on an error in front of a Rogers' walk. Arrowood attempted to sacrifice the runners over, but an errant throw to first scored Savage while sending Rogers to third. Sophomore Jay Kenyon belted a double off the wall in left field to score Rogers and give Lynchburg a 3-2 lead.

LC added two insurance runs in the sixth inning on RBIs from Evans and senior Michael Kenah.

Savage and Shiflett had three hits each for the Hornets while junior Trevor Johnston got his first save and junior Zac Patrick got his first win in game two.

Tyler Cox led Southern Virginia (12-9) with three RBI.

Lynchburg continues its homestand Wednesday against Hampden-Sydney. First pitch for the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) game is scheduled for 3 p.m.
