Big Flies, Career Firsts Help Propel Lynchburg to DH Split with Shenandoah
WINCHESTER, VA—Sophomore Pat Harris had a career day with his first homer of 2013 and four RBI while sophomore Martin Henderlite dominated again as the Lynchburg College baseball team took game one of an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader from #25-ranked Shenandoah University, 11-0, before dropping game two, 8-7 despite the first career grand slam from junior Jake Tanner.
Harris provided a huge spark for Lynchburg in game one, connecting on his second career homer and first of the season, for a 3-0 LC lead in the second inning. Dan Savage singled and Dustin Arrowood walked prior to the blast off the bat of Harris.
Lynchburg would go on to score a lone run in each of the subsequent four innings on RBIs from Joe Rogers, Brock Shiflett, and another by Harris for a 7-0 advantage going into the bottom of the sixth inning.
Henderlite (8-1) continued to deal for Lynchburg, adding to his Division III-leading win total with seven innings of shutout ball. He struck out five while walking two and surrendering seven hits.
Rogers, Michael Kenah, Savage, Shiflett, and Harris combined to go 17-for-25 with six runs scored and eight RBI in the first game.
Game two saw Shenandoah in control for the majority of the action. LC plated a run in the top of the third, sixth, and seventh innings, but SU answered with three, two, and two runs respectively in the bottom half of those innings for a 7-3 advantage heading into the eighth inning.
Savage led off the eighth with a single, advancing to second on a fielding error. Michael Burks came off the bench and was hit by a pitch before Andrew Props pinch-hit, picking up his first career hit to load the bases with no one out. Tanner got the perfect pitch, sending it out to right field and over the wall to tie the game at seven. The slam was Tanner's first career homerun.
Savage went 3-for-5 in game two while Kenah went 2-for-4 with an RBI and his seventh stolen base of the year.
Michael Scimanico (5-0) took the win in relief for Shenandoah (21-9/11-7 ODAC) to secure the split.
Lynchburg (18-15-1/8-8-1 ODAC) travels to Roanoke College (15-19/7-10 ODAC) Wednesday for a 5 p.m. ODAC matchup.
