Shannon Allan Sets Career Scoring Record in Hornets 76-63 Victory at E&H
EMORY, VA – Senior forward Shannon Allan posted 27 points to break the school career scoring record Tuesday night in the Lynchburg College women's basketball team's victory over Emory & Henry College. The Hornets defeated their Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rival 76-63.
Allan's 27 points put her at a total of 1557, one point ahead of previous holder Kelly Fackler, who set the record in 1997. Allan played all 40 minutes in the win, shooting impressively from the floor and distance. She made 10-14 shots overall and 5-7 from three-point range, including three in the first half. The senior forward broke the record on her second free throw with 29 seconds left in the game.
The two teams then went back and forth in the early going, exchanging the lead until the 15:03 mark when the Hornets took a two-point lead off of a Sammi Goldsmith layup. LC extended the advantage to 13 on two separate occasions around the midway point of the first half. Olivia DeFrancesco nailed a three-point field goal to go up 13, which E&H responded with a jumper of its own. Lauren Penley answered with two free throws to put the Hornets lead back to 13.
Emory & Henry then came back over the next five minutes. The Wasps chipped it away all the way to one after a three by Anna Green with 5:21 remaining in the half. Lynchburg pushed the advantage back to six over the remaining minutes, which included another layup by Goldsmith with four seconds on the clock.
After the intermission, the Hornets pressure increased and it caused problems for the Wasps. Penley, Goldsmith, and Chaney Forbush converted layups in the first two minutes to put LC up 10. Lynchburg failed to score over the next three minutes, but then Allan and Charmaine Hairston combined to put the game out of reach. Hairston had three points, while Allan knocked down another three, a layup, and a jumper to put the Lynchburg lead at 13. The Wasps could get no closer than eight the rest of the way.
Hairston finished with 16 points and five assists, while Goldsmith contributed 10 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Penley added eight points and seven rebounds.
Karina Farr led the Wasps (3-6 ODAC, 8-10 overall) with 15 points. Lynchburg used its height to outrebound E&H 50-41. The stifling defense employed by LC held Emory & Henry to 34.7% shooting, which was nearly 10 percentage points lower than the Hornets.
The Hornets (12-6, 7-2) finish up their mini-road trip on Saturday. LC will head to Randolph-Macon College for an important ODAC matchup. The Yellow Jackets are tied for first place in the conference and this game will go a long way to determine tournament seedings.
