Box Score Lexington, Va. -- In a game with conference tournament implications, the Hornets defeat the Generals in five sets, 3-2 (25-21, 25-21, 17-25, 20-25, 15-8).
The last time Lynchburg bested Washington & Lee was in 2010 and with the victory the Hornets move into second place in the ODAC and continue their winning streak, which is now at three games. Determination and a powerful offense helped the Hornets claim the victory as four different players had double digit kills.
Smashing 16 kills and hustling around the floor keeping plays alive, the Hornets never trailed in the first set and allowed the Generals to tie the score only once. The second set was to the same tune as Lynchburg went on an 8-1 run to take the lead 21-14. A late W&L rally brought the score to 24-21 but a kill by freshman Erin Farina halted the momentum and put her team up 2-0.
Watching the game, you could sense the Hornets wanted the win and they wanted it bad. Running down balls that went astray, diving all over the court and continually encouraging each other after each point were a common theme throughout the five sets.
Long stretches of points helped the Genrals claim the third set and despite a strong push by Lynchburg in the fourth set, Washington & Lee would snag the fourth frame and force a fifth set.
Following a W&L kill, the score would be square at 2-2 but the set would turn quickly in the Hornets favor. Kills by senior Jen Garrett and freshman Heaven Jarrell accompanied by a service ace from freshman Ragan Rudisill put the Hornets up 5-2. From there on out the Hornets controlled the flow of the game and allowed the Generals to only tally six more points, winning the match 15-8.
Junior Lynn Walsh recorded 27 assists and 11 digs but her greatest contributions did not show up in the stat line. She repeatedly was diving for balls and ran after balls well out of play and kept them alive, most leading to Hornet points. Freshman Lauren Stanford led the team with 14 digs and added two service aces, which puts her eigth in the ODAC for total digs and second for service aces.
Juniors Amanda Wrightson and Mesa Willis turned in spectacular performances Friday evening. Wrightson continued her dominance at the net registering a season-high seven blocks, putting her at 16 blocks in the last three games. Willis smashed 15 kills, second best only to her career best of 17 which she set earlier this season against Catholic. Jarrell finished with 10 kills while Willis and sophomore Amelia Dalton helped Wrightson dominate the net, each blocking three attacks.
Garrett had another all-around performance, crushing 13 kills and logging eight digs. The senior outside hitter is now only three kills from breaking the 1000 kills mark and currently sits in fourth all-time.
The volleyball squad has a quick turnaround as they host Mary Baldwin tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
